Title-Holder’s Narrow Win
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN. In the style now becoming customary to all their post-section games, last
- year’s champion Marewa team, skipped by Mrs C. Winstanley, moved into the x semi-finals of the New Zealand women’s fours bowls tournament yesterday.
With her last bowl, ( Mrs Winstanley won ■ her quarter-final, 20- , -19, against Mrs C. ■ Cloughley (Riverton). ’’’’ Mrs Winstanley was five up after three ends but with a four on the seventh, Mrs Cloughley levelled at 8-8. Then the Riverton four twice .drew two shots ahead, but Mrs Winstanley retaliated fanrnediately, scoring a three on fee twelfth and a four on the sixteenth to gain a twostroke lead. Made Costly Mistake ? The scoring continued to fluctuate until the two teams came to the last end level at 19-each. With her bowls surrounding the jack after the four first players had finished, Mrs Cloughley seemed assured of victory, but the ’Marewa third, Mrs D. Pierson, heightened the tension by staking the jack back from the main bunch of bowls to get the shot
' However, Mrs Cloughley ■struck again by taking the -lack even further back and leaving her shot only a foot from the jack. But after Mrs Winstanley's first bowl went wide, Mrs Cloughley made the mistake of changing hands and left the approach to the -jack open to Mrs Winstan- . toy’s final bowl. The title-holder did not need to be told that this was ■her chance, and she took it with a perfect draw to go in- . side Mrs Cloughley’s shot - bowl and win the match, '2O-19. Unbeaten Team Upset
The major upset was the defeat of the Winton Central team. Mrs J. Balch had led her four—comprising half the total membership of the Win-
ton Central club—to victory in all their previous games. However, she was soundly beaten by Mrs L. O’Shea’s four from the newly-formed Tinwald club—which has a membership of only 12 players—by 30-17, after leading 18-10 at the tenth end and 27-12 at the fifteenth. Another quarter-final was taken to an extra end before Mrs E. Silvester (Shirley) beat Mrs P. Stevenson (Riverton), 21-20. Results:—
