R. Funseth, who has not won a major tournament since 1965, overcame strong winds and heavy rain yesterday to shoot seven birdies and take a one-stroke lead after two rounds in the $100,009 Bob Hope Desert golf tournament.

Funseth, a 35-year-old professional, fired a six-under-par 66 for a total of 135. A stroke further back was the United States Open champion, L. Trevino, who had a 69, and two strokes behind Trevino, at 138 were F. Beard. A. Wall and J. Montgomery. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, had a 67 and was on 141. His putting was outstanding and he holed long putts on the second, third, ninth and thirteenth greens.
