Way To Recognise China Sought

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 7. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight that New Zealand had always thought the time was ripe for recognition of China.

But the main stumbling block was the refusal of China to accept the "twoChina” policy, which involved the acceptance of Taiwan as an independent nation. He made this comment to reporters tonight after saying that the question of recognising China was “still in the wind.” This followed talks with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Trudeau, in London, and with the Italian Foreign Minister, Mr Nenni, in Rome. “Both countries are trying to find some way to recognise Communist China,” Mr Holyoake said. “It is a question of when and how. “They have both decided

that the ‘when’ had been reached but the ‘how’ was the difficult thing.” Asked, if New Zealand also agreed that the time was ripe to recognise China, he said: “I have always said the time is ripe—the position hasn't changed.”
