PRIZE-WINNING STREET
Residents of Christchurch with high fences, especially those with attractive gardens, were yesterday asked by the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) to consider either lowering or removing them. This would give the public a better view of the beautiful private gardens. He was inspecting immaculate, flower-lined Royds Street, Fendalton, which won the Christchurch Beautifying Association’s annual street competition. Ryan Street, Woolston, was the runner-up. Mr Guthrey said that he would like to see removed any unsightly paling or iron fences. The influence of gardens, he said, was good for the community. Christchurch was deservedly noted for its gardens and deserved the title “garden city of New Zealand.” This was borne out by the high standard apparent in the street competition, and the home garden competitions. “I congratulate the people who have participated in the
home and street competitions and the many thousands of people who have helped make the city attractive,” said Mr Guthrey. Among those in Mr Guthrey’s party that inspected Royds Street, Fendalton, yesterday were the Director of Parks, and Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin); the patron of the Christchurch Beautifying Association (Mr W. R. Dailey), and the association’s president (Mr J. A. Martin), the organiser of the street competition (Mr E. J. Holnj), Mr O. C. Mitchell, representing the Waimairi County Council, and Mr J. Watson, editor of the “Mercantile Gazette.” Mr Guthrey this week toured many of the 95 streets entered from all districts, in this year’s street competition. District winners and places were:—
