City And Plains Scene On New Telephone Book

A view from the Summit Road over Heathcote Valley towards Christchurch and the plains will replace the picture of the Cathedral on the 1969 reprint of the Christchurch telephone directory. Mr M. E. Wilson, the chief postmaster, said yesterday that the Post Office was preparing to close entries for the new directory, and was asking subscribers to examine their directory listings and inform the Post Office by February 21 of any changes required. “Notice is not required for new connections, transfer of lease or removals to new addresses as such changes are already recorded,” said Mr Wilson.

“There are no major number alterations for the Christ-

church section of the 1969 directory but the new numbers for Leeston, Irwell and Springston automatic exchanges, opened in December, will be included, as will the new numbers for the Cheviot and Parnassus automatic exchanges to be opened later this year.” Delivery of the directory to subscribers, as far as could be predicted at this stage, would be late in June, 1969, he said.

“The binding trouble experienced with the 1968 directory has been overcome by the Government Printer and it is expected that the 1969 issue will stand up to reasonable usage without the directory breaking into separate sections. Meanwhile the Christchurch telephone services branch is replacing broken current directories with new ones upon request at the telephone services counter, Chief Post Office.

“As with the current Wellington and Dimedin telephone directories suburb names will be included in subscribers’ listings in the 1969 directory. It is difficult to determine precisely the boundaries between one suburb and another but considerable research and consultation with local bodies was carried out before the boundaries were defined and the Post Office thinks that the lines of demarcation should be reasonably satisfactory to subscribers. “Another new feature of the 1969 directory will be that the last of the yellow pages will give important civil defence instructions,” Mr Wilson said.
