Award Scheme Change

The Duke of Edinburgh has announced a change in his award scheme, which, since it came into being in 1956 to encourage the better use of leisure and develop community service, has made 232,000 bronze, silver and gold awards to young people throughout Britain and the Commonwealth. In future boys and girls will be able to compete on equal terms for awards for prowess in adventure and skill in leisure activities. —London, February 6.
