HIJACKINGS TO CUBA
U.S. Proposals To Castro (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 6. The United States Congress has been told Dr Fidel Castro does nothing to encourage airline hijackings to Cuba, and might be willing to help ease the problem. The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (Mr Frank Loy) told the Inter-State and Foreign Commerce Committee that the State Department had made specific proposals, which he did not detail, to Dr Castro on the issue. He added that if the hijackings continue at the present rate—there have been 13, nine of them Involving United States airlines, this year—the Cuban Government might adopt measures of its own; but he did not say what they might be. A Colombian airliner with 47 persons aboard was hijacked on a flight between Barranquilla and Medellin yesterday and its pilot ordered to fly to Cuba. In previous Colombian hijackings, those responsible have been subsequently identified as members of F.A.L.N., Colombia’s underground terrorist movement. Without exception, all have been granted political asylum by Dr Castro’s regime.
