PROSPECT OF PEACE

Harriman’s Allegation (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 6. The United States diplomat, Mr Averell Harriman, alleged today that some American officials still wanted to inten-, sify the Vietnam war, and he called on President Nixon to get rid of them. Mr Harriman, chief American negotiator at the Vietnam peace talks in Paris until President Johnson left office last month, said there were officials who disagreed with America’s limited objectives in Vietnam, just as there were during the Korean War in the 19505. “I think we can reach our objectives,” he said, “but we had better get rid of those people who want to escalate them."

Mr Harriman also said South Vietnam’s refusal to enter the expanded peace talks in Paris at an early date cost the Allies an opportunity to negotiate a possible beginning to the mutual withdrawal of American and North Vietnamese troops from the South.
