AWARD FOR BRAVERY
Vain Rescue Attempt Mr J. T. Pacey, of 63 Hei Hei Road, Hornby, who tried in vain to pull two men from a burning helicopter after it had crashed on the Mount Arthur Range, Nelson, on November 26, 1967, was presented with the Royal Humane Soiety’s bronze medal at a meeting of the Paparua County Council last evening. The presentation was made on behalf of the society by the county chairman (Mr D. H. Warren), who, in praising Mr Pacey’s bravery, said it was the first time a country resident had been so honoured.
Mr Pacey, a deer culler, was a passenger in the helicopter when it crashed on a deerrecovery flight. He jumped clear, but Messrs A. A. McArthur and E. W. Langston were trapped in the cockpit. Ignoring fire from a burst petrol tank, the risk of a second tank blowing up, and exploding ammunition, Mr Pacey made repeated attempts to drag the two men clear, but they died in the wreckage.
