A NOTABLE DRAFT

A spectacular first draft of lambs has been taken off the New Zealand and Australian Land Company’s Hakataramea station in South Canterbury this season. The company supervisor, Mr J. H. Ford, said this week that in size the draft represented a spectacular increase over previous years. Last week 9747 Corrie, dale lambs were drafted off their mothers at an average' weight of 31.21 b. This compared with drafts of 8023 last year and 6600 in the previous year.

In spite of the cold, slow spring the lambing this season had been the most successful on record, Mr Ford said, being 100 per cent from 17,000 breeding ewes. The success achieved was considered to be the result of modern stock management techniques coupled with the feeding of a mineral meal, particularly during the spring and early summer flush periods. The lambs were sent to the Waitaki Farmers’ Freezing Company’s works at Pukeuri.
