30 Ewes Rear 75 Lambs

A record for breeding-and-rearing ability in sheep entered in Britain’s national lambing competition has been established by a flock of Mashams owned by a farmer in Milby, Yorkshire. His 30 ewes reared 75 lambs, compared with the previous best performance of 2.36 a head, established in 1962. The farmer in

question gives a great deal of the credit for this achievement to his wife, who acted as shepherd. The highest award in the competition, in which size of the flock is taken into account, was won by a farmer and his son at Great Easton, Leicestershire, with a flock of 510 Masham and crossbred ewes which reared 1035 lambs.
