Housemaids Gone
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 30. The age of the butler and housemaid in Britain is over —almost. Fewer than 1 per cent of Britain’s homes now have a full-time servant and only 5 per cent have any domestic help. This is shown in an official handbook, “Britain, 1969,” just published, the “Daily Mirror” reports. The book also says that half the homes in the country have a washing machine, four in five a vacuum cleaner and two in five an electric blanket. Almost every house has an inside toilet and running cold water. Three-quarters have hot water and a bath. Half Britain’s population of 55,068,000 is married and seven out of eight adults can always be found at home any week night. “Mr Average” works a 40 to 42-hour week. His earnings have risen more than prices during the last 10 years.
