New Law On Immigrants
(N.ZP.A.-Reuter— Copyright)
LONDON, January 31.
New measures to prevent Commonwealth immigrants from entering Britain by arranging marriages of convenience were announced in the House of Commons last night. In future, men from Commonwealth countries will be allowed to jointheir wives and fiancees only in special compassionate circumstances, and they will have to obtain an entry certificate in their own country before leaving for Britain. The "Daily Sketch” says it had been expected that the Home Secretary (Mr James Callaghan) would stop immigrants coming into Britain for “phoney” marriages, but the restrictions on husbands wishing to join their wives came as a surprisefl The new regulations do not apply to women immigrants who wish to marry.
