Prices For Most Rams Well Above Last Year’s

Corriedale, Romney, and English Leicester rams sold at much better levels than last year when the Canterbury stud ram fair continued at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. The only section of the sale where values were behind last year’s was that for Border Leicesters.

In the main the advances were greater than those for the mutton-breed rams on Thursday. For English Leicesters the average price yesterday was more than double that set at the 1968 fair. For Corriedales values were up on average 35 to 36 per cent, and Romneys improved about 25 per cent. But the Border Leicester average fell away about 6 per cent.

For 26 Corriedales the average price was $338, compared with just under $250 for 22 at last year’s fair. As well as this 35 to 36 per cent improvement in price, there was also a better clearance at auction than last year, when fewer than a third of the rams entered were sold in the ring. Yesterday the proportion of sales made under the hammer rose to 54 per cent, but towards the close of the second run of the sale in particular the proportion of passings increased. However, the average of values for rams sold actually increased in the second run, when it was $341 for nine. In the first run 17 rams sold for an average of $336.50.

In contrast to the normal course of events the top price of the section came in the closing stages of the first run of the sale. Then a ram from E. W. Taylor, of Ashburton, attracted keen competition and reached $9OO before it was knocked down to K. V. Hood, of Somerton. With another sale in the second run at $550, Mr Taylor averaged $725 for his .only two entries. W. F. Dixon and Sons (Ranglora) had the second best sale at $B5O with a ram that was bought by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd for G. E. Taylor, of Ward. With sales at $l5O to their top money the Dixons averaged $437.50 for four rams, compared with $270 (or three at last year's fair. Selling six rams from $3OO to S7OO. F. C. Ridgen (Greendale) averaged 5425. but this was only fractionally ahead of his $420 average last year for' three.

The D. S. Johns Trust, of Cuiverden. which last year headed the sale at $650, sold two rams yesterday for $6OO and $2OO. The average was the same as (hat for two last year. For two making from $2OO to $3OO. A. E. Cross and Company (Rangiora) also averaged $250.

Romney Sala Although there was a 25 per cent improvement in Romney values, still less than halt the offering found buyers in the sale ring, and passings increased in the closing stages. But whereas only 16 out .of 82 were sold at auction a year ago, the proportion yesterday climbed to 42 per cent. In the first run of the sale 21 rams sold for an average of almost $317, but in the second run only 13 found a buyer in the sale ring, and the average fell away to $254.50. Overall, for the 34 the average was $293, which was $59 or 25 per cent up on the performance of a year ago.

An odd ram out of the selection was bought for the North Island. Last year’s top price of $450

f was icasily bettered, with C. R. ' Humphries and Company, of Charlton, Gore, realising $lOOO ’ for a ram that was bought by • Dalgety and New Zealand Loan. 1 Timaru, for J. Mackinnon, of Waitqhi, South Canterbury. I. I R. Oakley, of Mayfield, also had ‘ a sale at $6OO and D. H. Rob- ' ertson and Company (Gore) had r sales at $575 and $525. For three rams selling from ; $225 t/> $lOOO, Humphries and > Company averaged $5OO. I. R. with three sales from $2OO to $6OO, averaged $358, and ; the Campbell Downs Stud ; (Gore) averaged $350 for two selling from $3OO to $4OO. Both D. H. Robertson and Company, of Gore, and the Merryvale , Trust, of Gore, had an aver- . age of $342 for six and three . rams respectively. The coms pany's sales ranged from $2OO to $575 and the trust’s from $3OO to $4OO. Last year the company averaged $357 for ; three and the trust $342.50 for ’ two. . For two selling from $250 to $350 C. Burrows, of Culverden-, averaged $3OO and for two makr ing from $2OO to $320 F. H. ,• Chittock, of Lincoln had an average of $260, English Leicesters I There was a marked improvei ment in the level of values for , English Leicesters. Yesterday i for eight the average was $l5O compared with $71.25 for the • same number of rams sold last vear. But again passings in the ring were heavy. Last year , eight rams were sold at auction out of 28 offered. Yesterday eight were sold out of an entry of 31—26 per cent. The top monpy went to H. Bennett, of Ashburton, with a i sale to W. L. Clucas, of Ashburton at $3OO. Last year the highest price was only $l3O. Yesterday for two selling from $lOO Bennett averaged $2OO. and the estate E. S. Taylor (Woodend) with four selling at SSO to $270 averaged $162.50. Border Leicesters Border Leicester rams again met a hard sale. Although regular sales were made in the i first run, with vendors generally meeting the market, the' second run developed into a succession of passings. Several lots were sold to the' Manawatu and Wairarapa. but! North Island interest was nowhere near as strong as it was two years ago. Of 81 lots put into the ring yesterday, only 37 were sold at auction, and all but 11 of them were sold in the first run. The average fell from $151.50 5149 10tS SOl< * l aSt year t 0 Top price was $405 for an entry from J. G. Gunn (Darfield), the buyer being I. Gent, of Invercargill. Another of Mr Gunn’s ranis realised $4OO. but on the day, there were isolated prices. Last year, Mr Gunn topped , the Border Leicester section with a ram at $520.
