Trip For Archers
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Three archers will be ehosen to represent New Zealand in the twenty-fifth world championships at Valley Forge, in the United States, in August. It will be New Zealand’s first representation at the world championships. Before and after the New Zealand championships at Whangarei, from March 3 to 7. a selected group will be tested in district trials and at the final Rothmans sponsored New Zealand trials to be held at Mosgiel, near Dunedin, on May 3 and 4. The three to make the trip will be chosen from these finals, which will be based on two world championship-class F.I.T.A. rounds. The five districts within the New Zealand association have beeen asked to stage district trials with 16 archers from each going forward to the knock-out trials during the national championships at Whangarei. From the 80 picked archers, who will include men and women, eight from each district will proceed to the knock-out final at Mosgiel. In addition to the last 40, the final line up will include the five grand masters in the country, who are automatically eligible to compete. The best F.I.T.A. overseas score in recent months is 1238 The New Zealand record is 1194, shot by the national champion, B. Gillan (Dunedin). The F.I.T.A. round consists of 36 arrows at 90 metres, 36 at 70 metres and 36 at 50 and 30 metres for men, and the same number over 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for women.
