Care Urged For Start Of School

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Jan. 31.

Parents of children going to school for the first time next Tuesday were today urged to accompany their child for the first few days and point out the safest route and the safest places to cross the road. In a statement tonight the superintendent of traffic instruction for the Ministry of Transport (Mr J. L. Grant) said about 61,000 boys and girls would be going to school

for the first time on February 4. Mr Grant advised motorists to take particular care. “Especially between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and again in the afternoon between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., drivers should be particularly alert and be prepared to stop for children,” he said. A child would often do impulsive things and dash off the footpath, without warning, but this was hardly an excuse for a mature motorist who injured the child.
