Increase In Marriages

The number of marriages and births recorded in the Christchurch district last month rose sharply, compared with January last year, but the number of deaths recorded decreased.

Last month, 291 marriage notices were given, 60 more than in January last year, according to figures released yesterday by the Registrar of Births, Deaths;, and Marriages (Mr F. G. Elsmore). The number of registry office marriages increased by nine to 43. The number of births rose from 527 last January to 550 last month, but deaths, at 159, were 42 less.
