Fir Exports Trebled
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. Douglas fir exports to Australia this year may be treble the amount originally estimated by the New Zealand Forest Service. The service’s economist (Mr G. Yska) said that in March of last year it was thought that six million feet of Douglas fir would be sent to Australia this year, but more than 15 million feet had
already been exported by the end of October, and the figure might reach 18 million by the end of the year. “As we saw the conditions in March of last year, six million feet was what we thought we could sell to Australia with reasonable incentives,” Mr Yska said. “But since then the import duty into Australia on Douglas fir has been taken off and, of course, New Zealand devalued in November of last year. “Both these factors gave us a considerably greater incentive to sell to Australia.” Douglas fir exports to Australia were slightly more than two million feet in 1965 and
1966. Last year they totalled 3,543,000 feet, and by October of this year the figure was 15,561,000 feet.
