POLICE VIGIL

Arson At Churches <N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, December 13. Police patrols of 12 uniformed men and 12 detectives, some from outside centres, have been keeping watch on churches in the Manawatu and Wairarapa for the last month. They have been working 12hour days, with few days off. in a vigil to protect churches against further arson. But although all leads have been investigated, and all information supplied by the public followed up—hundreds of people being interviewed—inquiries have been unsuccessful. according to the head of the Palmerston North C. 1.8. (Detective SeniorSergeant D. J. Dwan). Supervision and patrols of the churches, however, will continue. The police still appeal to the public to report immediately any suspicious activity near churches, and to note the licence-numbers of suspicious cars seen near churches.
