Second Ewe Fair For Oxford
Two ewe fairs will be held at Oxford this season. In addition to the usual day early in March, a second day has been allocated for Thursday, February 13. This was announced this week by the secretary of the Oxford branch of Federated Farmers (Mr J. F. G. Anderson), who said that advice of the approval of the second day had been received from the North Canterbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association. Oxford Federated Farmers had made representations for the allocation of a second and earlier date, said Mr Anderson. While the March fair was suitable for high-country sheep, it was too late for low-country farmers, who previously had to dispose of their surplus ewes through the Addington markets.
This was not particularly convenient for farmers with comparatively small yardings and the earlier ewe fair would be particularly attractive to them, said Mr Anderson. The February ewe fair should result in a saving in cartage costs for local lowcountry farmers disposing of ewes through this sale.
