WHITEBAIT TOO DEAR

No Bid From Retailers

Whitebait at $1.40 a lb was considered too dear by many Christchurch fish retailers yesterday and they refused to buy when It was offered by P. Feron and Son, Ltd. The auctioneer set the price and when retailers failed to bid he bought it in. One retailer said afterwards that West Coast suppliers of whitebait were fixing a reserve price and were playing the South Island off against the North Island where prices were higher. He said the auctioneers were perfectly entitled to decline to sell if they had a better offer elsewhere, but local retailers felt prices should come down with larger supplies available. He said the average retail price yesterday was 95c a 1 lb. The manager of P. Feron and Son, Ltd (Mr M. L. Newman) said the whitebait was bought for an out-of-town order
