NO INSULT INTENDED

Mr Guthrey Replies

“I am sorry that Mr Rich construes my criticism of our local body set-up as being personal of either Waimairi councillors or residents,” Mr A. R. Guthrey, the Citizens’ Association candidate for the Christchurch mayoralty, said last evening. He was replying to a comment by the chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr D. B. Rich) that remarks he had made during the election campaign had been offensive, insulting to county residents and completely untrue. “It is the system that I criticise. Any system that not only divides a great city but also distributes the cost of public amenities unevenly is surely a matter on which one can be critical when our system of local government is under close scrutiny,” Mr Guthrey said.
