Farm Advisory Officer A farm advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture in Christchurch, Mr G. R. J. Cleland, will leave New Zealand early next month to spend three months and a half in the United States, under the auspices of his department. Mr Cleland, who has spent all his four years in the department with its economic section, will examine costbenefit procedures used in evaluating projects in which water is used. Mr Cleland said this week that the department had to

produce economic reports for all proposed water supply and irrigation schemes. The purpose of his visit to the United States would be to attempt to gain by American experience. The Americans were the leaders in this field of work, having been engaged in it since about 1908. California, where he would spend most of his time, was “very water orientated.” Mr Cleland will probably also visit Oregon. While in the United States, Mr Cleland will work mainly with the Soil Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, the Water Resources Council, and the University of California at Davis. The only son of Mr E. A. Cleland, of Christchurch, Mr Cleland attended Christ’s College and gained his bachelor of science degree from Canterbury University in 1964. In 1965, he gained the diploma of agricultural science from Lincoln College, and is now completing his thesis for the master of agricultural science degree.
