Grasslands Meeting
A TENTATIVE programme has now been prepared for the annual conference of the New Zealand Grassland Association, which will be held in Ashburton from October 22 to 24.
After the official opening by the Minister of Lands, Mr Maclntyre, speakers on the first day will include Mr C. P Whatman, farm advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture, who will give an introduction to the farming scene in Mid-Canterbury, Professor R. H. M. Langer, of Lincoln College, who will speak about the role of lucerne, Mr W. R. Lobb, superintendent of the Winchmore irrigation research station, on irrigation, Mr N. L. ShiHito, farm advisory officer (seed production) of the Department of Agriculture, on seed production, Mr S. J. Morrow, of Ashburton, and Mr B. K. Cameron, of Pendarves, MidCanterbury, on Hie role of glassland in management. Dr K. F. O’Connor and Messrs E. W. Vartha and R. A. Belcher, of the Grasslands Division at Lincoln, on weather, climate and variation in pasture production in Canterbury, Mr C. C. McLeod, field research officer of the Department of Agriculture. Timaru. on grassland fertility and cropping, and Professor J. D. Stewart, of Lincoln College, on the profitability and economics of cropping.
The annual meeting of the association will be held that evening and the presidential address will also be given. A field day will be held on October 23.
On the final day the programme will include papers on climate, pasture production and Irrigation by Mr D. S. Rickard, of the Winchmore irrigation research station, beef production potentials and output in Canterbury by Mr S. D. Walker, of the Sheep and Beef Cattle Survey, and Mr Lobb, the ecology of pasture pests, grass grub and porina, by Dr R. P. Pottinger, of Lincoln College, the performance and potential use of new
subterranean clover strains in New Zealand by Mr M. L. Smetham of Lincoln College, crown rust and pasture production by Dr J. A. Lancashire and Mr G. C. M. Latch, of the Grasslands Division and Plant Diseases Divirion respectively of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at Palmerston North, grazing system in dairy and sheep farms by Mr D. I. Glue, a farm advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture at Dargaville, mixtures, competion and productivity by Mr W. Harris, of the Grasslands Division, and some problems in successful nodulation of leguminous crops by Mr G. G. Taylor, technical manager of the Fruitgrowers’ Company, Nelson,
