LONDON.
The 20-year-old Sussex fast bowler, A. Jones, yesterday returned the best figures achieved in the English county cricket championships this season.
On a rain-affected pitch at Eastbourne, Jones took eight for 25 when Lancashire was dismissed for 88. Jones was playing in only his second championship game—his first was in 1966, when he took two wickets. Yesterday he bowled in two spells, taking three for 4 in his first eight overs and then five for 21 in six overs. His full figures were’ 14 overs, seven maidens, 25 runs, 8 wickets. Torrential overnight rain greatly curtailed the programme and the match at Bath, between Somerset and
Derbyshire, was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The pitch was under 3ft of water at one time. There was no play for the second day between Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan. Scores in other matches were:— At Colchester: Essex 211/9 dec. (B. Crump 6/84), Northamptonshire 98/4. At Southampton: Hampshire 119 (J. Cumbes 6/47), Surrey 70/3. At Eastbourne: Sussex 80 <K. Higgs 4/28, K. Shuttleworth 4/32) and 30/1, Lancashire 88 (A. Jones 8/25). At Bradford: Yorkshire 278, Kent 151/9.
