Indignation Over U.K. Army Cuts

LONDON, July 12.
British Army tempers were running high today after the announcement of defence cuts that will disband some of the nation’s most famous fighting units by 197.
Some indignant officers said they would fight a Government decision to reduce the Army, Navy and Air Force manpower to about 325,000 men—a 25 per cent reduction aince the start of the defence review in 1965. One regiment to be disbanded is the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who last year captured the Aden crater district before the territory became independent. “The men were visibly disappointed and shocked. We infend to go on fighting. We SV going to fight this de-
cision as hard as we possibly can,” the battalion press officer said after LieutenantColonel Colin “Mad Mitch” Mitchell broke the news. The “Glorious Gloucesters” regiment, which won battle honours and an American presidential citation when it fought off massive Chinese attacks in Korea—is to be merged with the Royal Hampshire Regiment. “It is devastating and sad for a regiment formed in 1694 to lose its identity,” commented Brigadier P. C. S. Heidenstam.
