Paper Bags For Rubbish

Sir, —In reply to “Irate Housewife,” who condemns the use of the paper rubbish disposal system, may I give my views, which are firsthand, not from a friend who, I would say, has stretched a few points. When the bag is correctly inserted into the holder, there is no chance of flies getting in. As for the work of waiting for ashes to cool, how ridiculous to assume there is so much work involved! When putting the bags out for collection, in the 18 months I used them at Tokoroa I found that, if tied securely with twine, there was little chance of rubbish falling, and the paper is too thick for dogs to penetrate. To solve the problem of a dirty house, attach the holder to the woodshed. “Irate Housewife” end others who hold similar views should try it out before condemning this system.—Yours, etc., PAPER FAN.

July 11, 1968. Sir, —Why does "Irate Housewife” expect ties to get

into paper-bag rubbish bins? All kitchen refuse should go to the compost heap. For flatdwellers it should be wrapped in newspaper, as should most of the rest of the rubbish thrown out, including cold ashes. I always wrapped the ashes from my anthracite stove when I found the fine dust irritated the collectors. More work for the housewife? Most rubbish tins seen on collection days are no credit to them, and a little thought might render the contents of the rubbish cart less disgusting and make the collectors’ work less unpleasant.—Yours, etc., LET’S KEEP IT CLEAN.
