The Swan Problem
Sir, —Whether Mr Mugford intended to be taken seriously in his statement on swans at last night’s meeting of the Acclimatisation Society one can only guess, but it will cause amusement among farmers and sportsmen. As I write, scores of swans are in a paddock a mile or so down the road, quite near Leeston township, helping a farmer’s cows to clip off the grass, apart from fouling the whole area. In unlimited numbers the swans are regarded as pests by farmers and by many sportsmen. The society having failed to keep them under control, the problem, as indicated in a news article on Monday, is now over to Federated Farmers for action which is certain to produce results.—Yours, etc., J.M. July 11, 1968.
