Six Motels Planned At Bush Inn
Plans to build six licensed motels, a lounge bar and a bottle store at 340 Riccarton Road, just to the dty side of the Bush Inn, were put to a sub-committee of the Waimairi County Council’s townplanning committee on Wednesday. The application for a conditional use in a residential B zone came from P. Burke and Company, Ltd, and the hearing was adjourned until July 24 so that amended plans can be submitted to objectors. Mr D. H. Hicks, who appeared for A. N. and F. A. Hall, 18 and 16 Waimairi Road, said he understood that Mr A. Hearn (for the company) would be applying for an adjournment. Mr Hearn was not present but he understood the adjournment would be sought to allow the position to be clarified.
The committee was told that the company had submitted one plan with its original application on May 16, but on May 30, submitted a second lay-out plan. The second plan, Mr Hicks contended, was a significant departure from the original, and a new application should be made. At this stage, Mr Hearn appeared (he said he had had a puncture en route) and agreed that an amendment would be proper to cover the situation that had arisen through a slight amendment to the plan. The chairman (Cr R. C. Neville) adjourned the hearing to enable the parties to study the amended proposals. Objections from nine residents of Newnham Terrace and Waimairi Road, and one from the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, were not heard.
