Sale Of Fish From Boats Permitted
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 11. Fresh fish—if sold by a licensed fisherman from the boat from which it was caught—can now be sold at any time, seven days a week.
Various items of building supplies and handyman’s requisites, plants, shrubs, trees and seedlings, wherever they may be sold, have also been exempted from the terms of the Shop or Offices Act, 1955.
The exemptions, gazetted today, follow the recommendations of the Exempted Goods Committee, which undertook a review of the list of goods earlier this year. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said that after considering submissions for and against the inclusion of fresh fish in the list, the committee felt that it would be in the
public interest if fish could legally be sold by a licensed commercial fisherman from the boat from which it was caught. “The question of building supplies and handyman's requisites was undoubtedly the one that gave the committee most concern,” said the Minister. “Timber has never been
subject to restriction but timber substitutes—many of which have a wood content—were restricted as to selling hours.
“Strong representations were made to the committee to include timber substitutes and items of hardware to enable the handyman to put them to use during his spare time,” he said. After full consideration of the various submissions the committee decided to include plywood, interior wallboard and tiles, decorative and faced boards, fibrous plaster and plaster board sheets, building paper and substitutes, damp course, sand and glasspaper fillers, adhesives, putty, nails screws, hinges and butts catches and handles and priming paint in containers not exceeding half a gallon. “I feel that this range of building materials and hardware items will go a long way in satisfying the demands of the home handyman, particularly at week-ends,” Mr Shand said.
Under a previous order plants, shrubs, and trees could be sold or exposed for sale only on the premises where they were grown. “The committee’s recommendation, that the qualifying words be deleted and seedlings added so that they can be sold at any place and at any time, has been accepted,” said Mr Shand.
