Power-Pole Dangers
Sir, —The members of the Association of Power and Telegraph Poles would like to make it known that they are tired of always being blamed for accidents between themselves and so-called “passing" motorists. Our records show that the slower a motorist is travelling the less chance we have of hitting him. It may be a little-known fact but poles who are employed on or near bends are paid more danger money than those on straight or speed-supervised highways. It would also probably be of interest to make it known that on the advent of the Stanley Steamer it was resolved that in future poles were only to hit cars in selfdefence. New Zealand should be proud of its poles. They will become a tourist attraction. Perhaps poles should hand over to cables, leaving only the middle of the road "safety” zones to be attacked with much gusto.—Yours, etc., KOS. July 9, 1968.
