Recommendations On Rose Bowl Golf
Recommendations on the selection of the 1969 Freyberg Rose Bowl team will be presented to a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association next month by the provincial selectors (Messrs R. E. Clements and J. W. Logan).
The committee made this request to the selectors at its July meeting after a discussion on the desirability of providing the representative team with more intensive match play in the weeks preceding the Rose Bowl contest.
The president (Mr S. G. H. Rieh) said the committee should draw up the fixture list for next year at an early date, so the selectors could plot their campaign. Committee members supported his suggestion of writing to tie other South Island assocu ■ tions to see if they thoug)\ the South Island inter, provincial tournament should be brought closer to the Rose Bowl contest. Mr I. Jory (Rangiora) said, special match play games should be held for the leading Freyberg candidates, as there were insufficient opportunities for the selectors to view the prospective players. There was no reason why a select group of possible representatives could not be work ing hard for selection in mid> January, said Mr Clements, who is also a member of the committee. This would have the effect of encouraging the players on the fringe to challenge the established team members for the five places in the side. Course Rating The committee decided to reconsider the course rating system before remits are called for the 1969 annual meeting of the New Zealand Golf Association. Mr A. C. Barr said the course rating committee in Canterbury had worked honestly and conscientiously, but he did not think any member of the committee was happy with the system. “Let us think about it and see how it ticks,” said Mr C. J. Ward. '‘We have got a few months up our sleeve.” ASHBURTON LADIES* CLUB Medal.— Silver: Miss B. Paterson, 92, 18-74; Mrs L. McLaine, 94, 16-78. Bronze A: Mrs R. Maynard, 98, 24-74: Mrs J. M.
