University Lead Increased In Men’s Hockey

In the main match of the tenth round of the Canterbury senior hockey competition. Harewood beat High School Old Boys, allowing University to Improve its, position In a bld for its second successive championship. Selwyn reacted favourably to its unexpected loss of the previous week and produced much better form against Woolston, and Hagley Old Boys dominated Linwood Old Boys In the second half after a somewhat unconvincing performance earlier. Results:— Harewood 2. H. 5.0.8. 1. H.gl.y 0.8. 3, Linwood 0.8. 0. S.lwyn 4, Woolston 1. Unlv.rslty 5, Syd.nh.m 0. Competitions points, with 6 call for and against, are:— nivsrslty 9 (43-5), Harewood 7) (18-12), Hagley 0.8. n (27-9), H. 5.0.8. 7 (19-15), Selwyn 4f (15-22), Sydenham 2 (12-31), Linwood 0.8. 2 (9-30), Woolston 6 (15-34). HAREWOOD V. H. 5.0.8. Harewood deserved its win because it played more constructively and achieved firoat.r success than Old Boys n taking the attack forward, whereas Old Boys used lateral passing when th.r. was a need and the opportunity to make mor* dlr.ct progress. Morecvsr, Harewood was the better team with regard to man-to-man passing in which it achieved th* greater accuracy. At tlm.s. Old Boys faltered on defence because of mlsunderstanding between the goalkeeper and the backs, and tardiness In clearing the ball was further exposed by the swift recovery and harassing Of Harewood.

S Cranfield was very sound In the Harewood goal, and was always well covered by his backs, of whom E. Clark was the better, tackling well and passing most constructively. His partner, J. Bate, was somewhat erratic In both trapping and passing, but his contribution was by no means negligible. On the left, A. Chesney, was the best of the helves, using his stickwork to advantsge and covering well, and G. Haste in the centre gsv. him good support by maintaining a steady distribution to the forwards. D. Shepherd was less linpressive than usual, his stick work being hampered by the proximity of the ball to his feet.

Old Boys were more worried by the swift breaks of C. Broadhurst on the right-wing than by his passing, which was not constructive, a fault equally apparent In the first naif in the play of D. Stanton, who was more effective after the interval. R. Wilson played w.ll, proving most successful in gaining spaces for passes and controlling the ball neatly The back-tackling of K. Kiernan was always in evidence, and there was considerable improvement .in his attacking play. G. Marshall On the left was reasonably constructive In the Old Boys half-Une, where A. Paterson again provided the main source of stability for the team. On the right C. Francis gave his forwards good support but his defensive play was weak. Over-dribbling by E. Barnes handicapped the attack on the right Bank, and although T. Thomas on the left-wing made some good breaks from which ho produced strong centre passes there was a lack of cohesion in the forward line as a whole.

T. Wall’s baok-taekllng was the best feature of his play, and R. Bailey In the centre had to seek and create his own opportunities, which he did well enough to be a threat to Harewood throughout. D. Curtis and K. Kiernan scored for Harewood. and C. Caldwell ecored for High School Old Boys. Umpires:—Dr L. M. Berry and Mr K. Mortimer. HAGLHY 0.8. v. LINWOOD 0.8. In the first half Hagley had a

slight territorisl advantage, but Its attacks repeatedly collapsed through poor passing sgainst a stubborn defence. Thereafter It achieved better , control, and exerted such pressure that Linwood was forced into eerlous error* in its; attempts to clear the ball, and eatabllsh countersttacks. ■ Peter Clark at right-back and G. Smith at' left-half dealt capably with opposing attacks, and K. Thomson at centre-half was in forceful mood, especially in assisting his forwards. W. Thomson dribbled with customary skill at Inslde-rlght. but should have brought R. Thomson into the play more often. Paul Clark at inside-left made many interceptions and used his stickwork to advantage. For Linwood, I. Stanton defended skilfully at left-back, and there was at times good co-oper-ation between K. Budhla at right-back and A- Bhana at right-halt. The centre-half, A. Best, produced useful stickwork but suffered from poor positioning by his forwards who thereby hampered his passing. The three Inside forwards, C. Bhana, M. Read and M. Lumsden, tolled hard, made some progress with solo dribbling, but failed to combine. Goals tor Hagley Old Boys were scored by Paul Clark, w. Thomson, and K. Thomson. Umpires: Messrs D. Denniston and J. Pauling. UHIVBRSITY v. SYDENHAM A partial recovery of form by university allowed it to cia'mp Sydenham in a vic* for most of the game, and th* acor* would have been higher if th* shooting had not been eo bad. There was still mil-trapping and poor passing in University's ranks, but at least speed to the ball and greater willingness to pass ware evident. On defence for University, R. Campbell, C. Incson and S. G. Meister tackled and intercepted well enough, and A. Borron at right-half gave his forwards swift and close support. The best of these was J. Barren, whoa* dribbling waa most elusive and produced a magnificent goal from a difficult angle. B. J. Meister and J. H. Christensen also mad* deep penetrations, and th* speed of t. Crosson on the left-wing enlivened proceedings. Th* other goals for University were scored by B. J. Maister, 8. G. Malstor, J. H. Christensen and T. Crossen. For Sydenham, A. Kir wan emerged with the ball at times and passed with care, and M. Bennett at centre-half made a similar contribution. The best of the forwards on attack was D. Wood at Inside-right, but his colleagues by their beck-tack-ling did rob University of soms fluency. Umpires: Messrs E. Ambler and D. Holland. SBLWYH V. WOOLSTON Good trapping and earlier passing of Improved accuracy enabled selwyn to attain a degree of combination which Woolston could not equal. Selwyn’* backs, A. Abernethy and B. Eden, played soundly, and S. Palmer expended much energy and some useful stickwork to good purpose. Of the forwards, I. Brown and n. Best, although over-dribbling

at times, elway* worries wools ion, end there wore fias'ies of co operation and progress on thought Sank from c. Hill and 'poor' trapping, faulty footwork In dribbling and too much solo play handicapped Woolston throughout, but it managed to exert some pressure at times, Isrgsly through the swift breaks of H. Kerrigan end B. Aldridge. Goal* were shored tor Solwyn by I. Hill (2) and R. Best f2). and B. Aldridge scored for Woolston. Umpires: Messrs P. Chant and L. Lloyd.
