Three Hurt In ’Copter Crash
CVew Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 7. Three men have been admitted to the Kew Hospital, Invercargill, with injuries suffered when a helicopter crashed at Tuckers Beach Road, Lower Shotover, about 11 ajn. today.
The injured men are Timothy William Wallace, a principal of Luggate Game Packers, Ltd, who was piloting the machine when it struck a power line, and Lindsay Guy Herron, owner of the Branches sheep station, and Richard Herbert Barton, of Dunedin, who were passengers.
The helicopter started working at 10.30 a.m. on Mr A. A. Middleton’s 3000-acre property, which includes part of Queenstown Hill. Messrs Middleton, M. Dennison and R. Jones were flown to a ridge on the property with three loads of hay, and left there so that the hay could be fed to sheep. About 11 a.m. the helicopter, which had been working from a paddock near the Middleton homestead, picked up Messrs Burton and Herron, and was taking off when it struck three high tension power lines. The lines were about 70 feet from the ground and were strung out between two spurs. Mr Herron walked to a house about a quarter of a mile from the crash to obtain help.
Kew Hospital reported tonight that the three men were in satisfactory condition.
