HURDLES TO SOLSTAR

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand-bred five-year-old, Flaming Sun, went within three-quarters of a length of causing a massive upset in the $12,000 Grand National Hurdle at Flemington on Saturday. Flaming Sun, a Summertime gelding trained in Tasmania, started at 66/1. He finished second to Solstar in the rugged three-mile event. Sllmac was a length and a half away third. The well-backed New Zealandbred jumpers, Summer Flight and Mission, the second favourite, finished sixth and thirteenth in the 16-horse field. Riskless, the favourite, ran well below his recent form and finished a disappointing fifth. R. Kitchin rode a well-judged race on Solstar, which was never further back than third. The gelding hit the front half a furlong from home and managed to hold off Flaming Sun’s lata challenge.
