GOOD YEAR FOR WINEMAKERS
The Canterbury Amateur Winemakers’ Club had brought together a sound collection of amateur winemakers with a very keen committee at the helm, said the president (Mr P. Brotherton) In his report at the first annual meeting recently. This was obvious from the success of their working display at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Chrysanthemum Show which won the
dub a Royal Horticultural Society Bronze Medal, he said.
The club held two very successful social functions—the first, a Christmas party, when a competition was held, and the second a club birthday party. Mr Paul Clark, a committee member, had presented a cup which the club had named the “Paul Clark Challenge Cup.” It will be presented annually to the maker of best sweet red wine, with the exception of this year when sweet white wines will also be eligible. Members had competed in the Duvauchelle A. and P. Show and later in the Dunedin A. and P. show where they won one-third of the prizes, said Mr Brotherton. Two overseas visitors, Mr and Mrs R, Mitchinson, from the Lune Valley Wine Club in Lancashire, England, visited the club during the year.
