Games Appeal Supported

More than $l4OO was collected on Saturday in the Canterbury Amateur Sports Federation’s h6use-to-house appeal, held in an attempt to raise funds to send the province’s category B competitors to the Games in Mexico City in October. This figure was by no means final, the secretary of the federation (Mr G. R. Towart) said yesterday. Many boxes were not expected back until Monday or Tuesday and the final result would not be known until they were in, he said. About 500 collectors, many of them from secondary

schools, had helped with the appeal which was a considerable improvement on the numbers which had turned out for the appeal to send athletes to the Jamaica Commonwealth Games two years ago, Mr Towart said. However, only about a quarter of the houses in Christchurch had been covered. “We would need 2000 collectors to cover the whole of Christchurch,” he said. “With four times as many collectors we would have got four times as much money. It is as simple as that.” Mr Towart praised the public attitude towards the appeal. “The public is always anxious and willing to support a thing like this. If is the best we have done in the last 10 years,” Mr Towart said. Although many household-

ers did not receive a visit from a collector on Saturday, the federation has no intention of holding another house-to-house appeal next Saturday. Its next move will be an approach to the businesses. Business houses and other organisations will be written to, and it is hoped that donations from this source will bring the amount collected up to the target of $5OOO. Letters will begin going out tomorrow.

The result of this part of the appeal will not be known for several weeks. The federation hopes to have its allocations meeting late this month or early in August. The money for category B competitors must be lodged with the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association by August 23.
