TRADE GUILD
Journeyman Engineers (N Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, July 7. Whangarei engineers have formed a guild to improve the standard and standing of journeymen engineers. The guild, which is nonpolitical, will not affiliate with any particular union or with the Federation of Labour. The president of the guild —the Engineering Tradesmen’s Guild —is Mr J. D. Jarman, of Parua Bay. Its aims were to improve the standard of tradesmen and to gain recognition for the skill of qualified journeymen, he said. “We hope to raise the trade education of all engineers and to improve the teaching facilities for apprentices.” Fitters, turners, toolmakers, boilermakers, welders, blacksmiths, and automotive machinists, are eligible to join the guild. The secretary, Mr J. F. Loveridge, said today that moulders and other associated tradesmen might be included. Only people who could produce evidence of having completed an apprenticeship would be admitted.
