SHIELD MATCH

Hawke’s Bay Form Poor (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER. Hawke's Bay on Saturday won its second Ranfurly Shield match of the season, against East Coast, at Napier. Hawke's Bay, after being contained to a 9-nil lead at halftime, speeded late in the game to win, 31-nil. After the match the Hawke’s Bay captain. K. R. Tremain, said it was his team's worst display since winning the shield from Waikato two seasons ago. Hawke's Bay’s troubles stemmed from a general looseness in the forwards, bad passing and dropped passes by the backs, and intense tackling by the East Coast backs.

The All Black centre, W. Davis, had a poor first half, but towards the end of the game returned to top form. The locks, R. Abel and K. Crawford, lost little to the veteran I. Macdonald and H. Stewart. for East Coast. Tries for Hawke s Bay were scored bv M. Duncan (2). T. Johnson (2), D. Curtis. W. Davis, G. Condon, and B. Furlong. The full-back. I. Bishop, who is normally the most reliable of kickers, converted only two of the eight tries and kicked one penalty goal.
