Mitchell Wins Under-21 Table Tennis

Playing some of bls best table tennis this season. R. Mitchell (Canterbury) out-hit the South Canterbury representative. B. G. Butler, 21-12, 19-21, 21-15, to win the under-21 singles title at the Canterbury open junior championships at Selwyn Street yesterday. This was the first time the Canterbury association has held an official under-21 championship, and judging by the standard of the entries, it was a success.

Miss M. P. Green showed great determination to beat the No. 3 seed in the open women’s singles event, Mrs L. M. Barker (South Canterbury), 21-18, 9-21, 21-12, in the final of the girls' under-21 singles. She won this match comfortably but met unexpected opposition from Miss M. Foley (Marlborough) in the final of the under-18 girls’ singles. Miss Foley won the first game, 21-16, but Miss Green fought back to take the next two, 21-16, 23-21. Miss Foley had her chances to win but the greater consistency of Miss Green enabled her to retain the title. In the absence of J. J. Weir (Canterbury), the top seed, who was scratched because of lateness, D. A. Leong (Wellington) beat M. Duffy (Otago). 21-15, 23-21, in the final of the boya’ under-18 singles.
