ARMING ISRAEL

Supply Of Missiles (N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright i WASHINGTON, July 7. The United States has agreed to sell Israel more Hawk ground-to-air missiles, the Defence Department said. A Pentagon announcement said the missiles would help defend Israel against air attack. It said Israel would be supplied with a battery of the missiles under a credit agreement reached on June 29. A battery of the missiles was delivered in 1965. This is the first agreement to provide more of the missiles since the Arab-Israeli war of June last year. The Defence Department announcement followed several moves in Congress to get the Government to provide Israel with more weapons after reports of Soviet supplies pouring into Arab States. But United States officials said the missiles being supplied to Israel were purely defensive. They were designed to counteract any possible enemy air attack, the officials added.

The Pentagon declined to say how many missiles were involved or their cost.
