SHORTENING OF NAMES

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 5. Road signs bearing abbreviated place names will in future be referred to the New Zealand Geographic Board. The decision was made after a meeting this week of representatives of the Transport Department, the Automobile Association, the Roads Board, the N.Z.8.C., the Maori CoqnciL and the Geographic Board. The chairman of the Geographic Board (Mr R. P. Gough) said today that the organisations concerned had agreed to get the board’s approval before using a shorter form of place names. “Abbreviations will, as far as possible, indicate the correct pronunciation of names, probably by omitting vowels and retaining consonants and syllables.” This policy would be followed with both Maori and European place names, he said.
