COMALCO DECISION

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 5. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) said today that a statement on the establishment of an aluminium smelter in New Zealand would be made early next week. Earlier this week he said it was hoped the statement could be announced late this week. - Next week’s statement is expected to announce that the Government has reached agreement with Comalco and its two Japanese partners for the construction of a smelter—based on cheap electric power from Manapouri —at Bluff.

The two Japanese companies—Sumitomo Chemicals and Showa Denko K.K.—are believed to be providing finance for Comalco’s venture.
