SEINER BEACHED

Gash In Bow (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 5. The Danish seiner Podgora was beached at Rakino Island seconds before she sank after a collision northeast of the Noises Islands this afternoon. The 48ft fishing boat and another, the St George, collided while laying out nets at 12.10 p.m. The St George immediately began a desperate attempt to beach the Podgora, which had a 6ft by 2ft gash in her port bow, extending below the waterline.

While hastily summoned salvage men flew to the scene the St George put a line on the other craft and headed for Woody Bay, on Rakino Island, eight miles away. “They did a great job,” said Captain G. W. Dunsford, who led the salvage team. "It was touch and go all the way. The forward bulkhead was split in the collision and we did think of putting her ashore on the Noises. The beach was too steep there and we took a gamble,” said Captain Dunsford. ‘The fish hold and the engine room were flooded and she sank just as we made the beach. Only the wheelhouse was showing then but the tide has uncovered the hole In her bow.”

Tonight Captain Dunsford patched the hole and shored up the bulkhead.
