BASTILLE DAY
French To Have Ball
One of the highlights of the New Zealand tour for the French Rugby team promises to be a Bastille Day ball in Christchurch after the first test next Saturday.
The Christchurch Alliance Francaise, which is part of a world-wide organisation, has invited the French players to the ball, which will be held at the Horticultural Hall. Bastille Day, a time for great revelry in France, falls on July 14. a Sunday, but the Christchurch Alliance Francaise will be celebrating the anniversary on the previous evening.
Previous Bastille balls in Christchurch have been a considerable success, and the Tricolours should be very much at home in the convivial French atmosphere of the function. Among the guests will be the French Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr J.-F. Duflos, who is patron of the organisation.
The Christchurch Alliance Francaise has a membership of about 100, of whom onethird are French or semiFrench. Another third are from other European countries, while the remainder are French-speaking New Zealanders.
