BLENHEIM. The Canterbury men’s team played balanced basketball, no matter who was on the court, to beat Marlborough, 63-41, last evening.
Marlborough went to a 4-0 lead but Canterbury soon recovered, and after 10 minutes of the first half was leading 18-8. Canterbury was well In command until half-time, when the score was 33-19. However, for the first five minutes of the second half, with its top line-up on court, Canterbury was struggling to retain this lead. With several substitutions, it again took command and went away to a comfortable win.
The younger members of the team, T. Guthrie and K Luxton, played particularly well when they were on the court.
For Marlborough, P. Rainbird had a splendid game. He was fouled off near the end of the second half but still was top scorer with 11 points. Canterbury’s scorers were: Culliford (13), Uttley (12), P. Stigley (9), K. Luxton (8), Morris (8), P. Ross (5), Guthrey (4), R. Mallard (2) and A. Hounsell (2).
All players played well, but outstanding was J. Culllford. who scored 13 points in vigorous, fast play. His defence was sound. J. Uttley rebounded hard and scored well from good drives. C. Morris played one of his best games for Canterbury this season. His passes for the fast break frequently put pressure on Marlborough's defence.
