(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 5. Neither the Government nor the Opposition has accepted invitations to send speakers to a “teach-in” on the Omega navigation system to be held on Sunday, the organisers said today.
Sponsored by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Committee on Vietnam, the Wellington Labour Representation Committee and the Victoria, Canterbury and Massey university students’ associations, it will be held in the Student Union building at Victoria University.
He said all material held by any Government department relating to the Omega programme and to the preliminary investigations into the siting of a station in New Zealand could be made available to the society. Mr Holyoake announced that a briefing for members on the implications of the Omega system would be held next Wednesday morning.
The organiser (Mr D McGregor) the national affairs officer on the Victoria University Students’ Association, said invitations had been sent to many people and students today handed out pamphlets on the meeting to travellers. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today “warmly welcomed” the proposal that the Royal Society of New Zealand examine the issues raised by debate on the Omega navigation system. Earlier this week the society reported that It intended to set up a committee to report on the scientific aspects of the Omega system.
“The Royal Society, representating as it does all scientific associations in New Zealand, is eminently qualified to make a scientific appraisal of the Implications of the Omega system.”
