Anglicans To Discuss Stewardship

A discussion which will give members of the clergy and laity from the Archdeaconry of Christchurch an opportunity to look together at the meaning of stewardship, ask hew it relates to the mission of the Church, and examine programmes needed to meet the needs of the churches, will be held at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Merivale, on July 17 and 18. The meeting, the first of several to be held during the year throughout the Diocese of Christchurch, is being organised by the diocesan stewardship committee. Mr E. L. Mascall, the diocesan stewardship adviser, said that although many very successful stewardship programmes had been held in the diocese, the committee had felt for some time the need to take a closer look at thoughts and problems challenging the work, and to find ways of relating it to the needs of local parishes. The meeting will be divided into four sections, with after-

noon sessions for clergy and evening sessions for clergy and laity. It is hoped that the vicar of each parish or his curate and the churchwarden accompanied by one or two other members will attend each session. The four sections will be: the Biblical message of stewardship, discussions on the work in different places and different confessions, an examination of how stewardship is carried out in different churches and parishes and the prophetic judgment of stewardship. Mr Mascall said, however, that the problems associated with separate parishes would not be discussed to the extent of excluding the overall needs of the diocese. The meeting will be conducted by the Vicar-General of the diocese (the Ven. H. M. Cocks), the vicar of Cashmere Hills (the Rev. R. P. Andrews), the vicar of Addington (the Rev. J. D. Froud), and the vicar of Merivale (the Ven. R. P. F. Plalstowe). It is planned to hold the next meeting in about eight to 10 weeks, probably in Timaru.
