Unions Demand More Pay

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 5. Several Auckland unions decided today to seek wage increases from their employers, in accordance with policy made at a special Federation of Labour conference in Wellington on Thursday.

The federation urged unions to demand wage increases of at least 5 per cent. The Printing Trades Union wants urgent meetings with employers to discuss a union demand for a minimum rise of 5 per cent The Freezing Workers’ Union wants the employers to meet union assessors at a meeting in Wellington next Wednesday. The union will ask for a 7.6 per cent wage rise.

The National Carpenters’ Union plans to meet building trade employers to ask for a similar increase, and the Auckland Labourers’ Union is seeking a 7.6 per cent rise for 100 building labourers employed by the Fletchei group. The president of the Auckland Employers’ Association (Mr E. P. Salmon) said today that employers should not be panicked into pay decisions. Any talks on wage increases should take place in the accepted manner.
