LONDON BRIDGE

‘Large Antique’ Duty Free (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) LONG BEACH, (California), July 5. The first 855 tons of London Bridge has entered the United States, customs free under the classification of “large antique.” The 698 granite stones—about one-eleventh of the complete bridge arrived aboard the Norwegian freighter Fossum under the shadow of the former British liner Queen Mary, which is being turned into a hotel, restaurant, and convention centre in Long Beach harbour. The granite stones will be taken in a fleet of 47 trucks to the border of California and Arizona, where the bridge will be reconstructed as a tourist attraction on an arm of the Colorado River. The cornerstone of the bridge will be laid on September 23. It is expected that the bridge will be open for traffic in early 1971. The bridge project is being undertaken as the main attraction of a large realestate development on the Colorado River.
